Ends on December 15, 2017

The Whiting Foundation is pleased to announce the Whiting Literary Magazine Prizes for print and digital publications. Complete details about the program are available on our website at this link. Please thoroughly review the eligibility criteria and the application itself before beginning. (Note that applicants must be not-for-profit in the US, annual budgets of no more than $500,000, and have published at least annually for at least three years.)

The questions in the application will change depending on whether you indicate that you are applying as a print or online publication, so please answer that question (the second item) before proceeding further. Also note that Section III requests that you fill out and upload an information sheet; the sheet for print publications is linked here, and the sheet for online publications is linked here.

Applications must be submitted through this portal by December 15, 2017 at 11:59 Eastern Time. Note that the application asks for letters of reference from writers you have published, so please request these far enough in advance that your references have time to complete them thoughtfully. No late or incomplete applications will be accepted. Applicants will be notified of the results in the late spring of 2018, and a public announcement will be made in the summer.

The application is intended to be a way to showcase your sensibility and your passions, particularly in the essay questions. We encourage you not to use grant-application language, but to let the ethos of your publication shine through. The range of questions are posed to help reviewers form a rich picture of your organization and how it benefits writers and readers.

Each application will be reviewed initially by two outside readers; the strongest candidates in each of the three categories will go on to be considered by a separate panel of final judges. Readers and judges will consist of diverse experts in the field drawn from all over the country, who will serve anonymously to shield them from any external pressures.

The reviewers will consider the following criteria, which structure the application below:

  • Publishing extraordinary writing with verve and flair
  • Connecting with readers
  • Supporting talented writers on the page and in the world
  • Advancing the literary community
  • Preparing for future contributions

If, after reviewing the application and the guidelines on the program website, you have additional questions, please contact us at litmags@whiting.org.
